Plan Your Visit to Ribeauville

Getting There

Ribeauvillé is best reached by flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport, which serves the tri-border region of France, Germany, and Switzerland and sits roughly an hour's drive from the village. Strasbourg Airport is another convenient option, with good road connections through the heart of Alsace. From either airport, visitors can continue by car or regional transport along the Route des Vins d'Alsace, which passes directly through Ribeauvillé.

Where to Stay

Staying within or immediately adjacent to the village center puts visitors within easy walking distance of the main square and surrounding lanes. The town offers a range of options from intimate chambres d'hôtes in historic half-timbered buildings to small family-run hotels, all providing an authentic sense of Alsatian character. Booking in advance is recommended during peak seasons.

Other Attractions

Ribeauvillé is flanked by three medieval castle ruins—Girsberg, Saint-Ulrich, and Haut-Ribeaupierre—which reward hikers with sweeping views over the Alsatian plain. The town's Grand'Rue is lined with half-timbered houses, Renaissance fountains, and artisan shops selling local Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines from the surrounding vineyards. Wine tasting at local domaines is a year-round draw, and the Route des Vins makes Ribeauvillé an excellent base for exploring neighboring villages such as Riquewihr and Kaysersberg. The Pfifferdaj festival, held each September, celebrates the town's historic tradition of wandering minstrels and remains one of Alsace's most distinctive folk events.

History & Culture

Ribeauvillé's origins stretch back to the early medieval period, when it developed under the protection of the powerful Ribeaupierre noble family, whose name the town still bears in its Alsatian form. Positioned along ancient trade routes at the foot of the Vosges Mountains, the town grew into a prosperous center of wine production and craftsmanship, a role it has maintained for centuries. Its well-preserved old town reflects successive layers of Alsatian, French, and Germanic influence—a cultural layering that defines much of this border region's identity. Ribeauvillé passed between French and German control at various points in modern history, yet its architectural and culinary traditions have remained remarkably coherent. The town has long hosted a Christmas market rooted in Alsace's tradition of Advent celebrations, drawing on both French and Germanic customs. Alsace is widely credited with originating many European Christmas market traditions, and Ribeauvillé's celebration reflects that heritage in a setting that feels genuinely local.
