Weihnachtsmarkt Freiburg

The Freiburg Christmas Market transforms the historic Old Town of Freiburg im Breisgau into a glittering festive wonderland spread across eight distinct locations, making it one of Germany's most atmospheric and spatially diverse holiday markets. Rooted in a tradition dating back to a 19th-century Christkindlesmarkt on the Cathedral Square, the modern market has delighted visitors since 1973 and is organized by the Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe (FWTM). With over 120 lovingly decorated stalls, the Weihnachtsmarkt Freiburg spans the Rathausplatz, Kartoffelmarkt, Unterlindenplatz, Franziskanerstraße, Turmstraße, Predigertor, Rotteckring, and the Colombipark — which joined the market in 2021 and features a popular photo point. The Rathausplatz setting is particularly enchanting, framed by the Gothic cloister of a former Franciscan monastery, the nave of the Martinskirche, and the picturesque facades of the two historic town halls. Visitors can browse 75 craft stalls and 38 food vendors, including 14 dedicated Glühwein stands. The market celebrates Black Forest craftsmanship with woodcarvers, gemstone cutters, glassblowers, potters, candlemakers, and straw weavers drawing admiring crowds. Culinary highlights include the local Lange Rote sausage, regional Tuniberg Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, Schupfnudeln, and Schwarzwälder smoked specialties. Families are well catered for with two carousels, a Children's Bakery at Kartoffelmarkt where kids bake their own cookies, a candle-making workshop at Rathausplatz, and a St. Nicholas visit on December 6th. Arrive by tram from Freiburg Hauptbahnhof (Line 1, direction Lassbergstraße, exit Bertoldsbrunnen) for the easiest and most sustainable access to this beloved festive tradition.
