Weihnachtsmarkt Freiburg - Rathausplatz

The Freiburg Christmas Market at Rathausplatz is one of Germany's most atmospheric holiday markets, set against a stunning backdrop of Gothic cloisters from a former Franciscan monastery, the nave of St. Martin's Church, and the picturesque facades of the city's twin town halls. This historic setting transforms the heart of Freiburg's old town into a festive village of over 120 lovingly decorated market stalls spread across eight locations throughout the city center, with Rathausplatz serving as the central hub. The market draws deeply on the traditions of the Black Forest region, making it a showcase for authentic craftsmanship. Visitors can watch wood carvers, gemstone cutters, glassblowers, potters, candle makers, and straw weavers at work as they stroll through the narrow market lanes. The air is filled with the irresistible aromas of Glühwein, roasted almonds, Lebkuchen (gingerbread), hot chestnuts, Schupfnudeln, and Black Forest smoked specialties. Beyond Rathausplatz, the market extends to the Kartoffelmarkt, Unterlindenplatz, Franziskanerstraße, Turmstraße, Predigertor, Rotteckring, and the Colombipark — each area offering its own character and charm. Families will find plenty to delight children, including two carousels, a Christmas bakery on the Kartoffelmarkt where kids can bake their own cookies, and a candle-making workshop on the Rathausplatz. St. Nicholas himself visits the Rathausplatz on December 6th at 5 PM to hand out small gifts. The market first opened in 1973 with just 20 stalls and has grown into a beloved regional tradition organized by FWTM. Arrive by tram from the main station — alight at Bertoldsbrunnen for the quickest walk to Rathausplatz.
