The Craiova Christmas Market — Târgul de Crăciun Craiova — transforms Romania's fifth-largest city into a sprawling winter wonderland each November, spreading across six themed squares in the city centre. Recognized by European Best Destinations as one of Europe's finest Christmas markets (ranking 6th in 2021, 3rd in 2022, and 2nd in 2023), this event is the only Romanian market consistently selected for that prestigious European competition. The 2025 edition is themed around "The Nutcracker," with over two million lights illuminating unique gingerbread-style chalets across six distinct zones: Mihai Viteazul Square hosts the iconic Flying Santa's Sleigh show nightly at 6:30 PM with ballet dancers from the Romanian Opera Craiova, artificial snow, and strobes; Frații Buzești Square serves as the main stage for live concerts, folk performances, and headline artists; William Shakespeare Square (English Park area) features a panoramic Ferris wheel, carousels, and VR Christmas experiences for families; Theodor Aman Street offers a street food festival blending traditional Romanian and international flavors; the Doljana Zone presents festively decorated chalets; and English Park delights children with giant figurines and fairy-tale characters. Visitors can enjoy an outdoor ice rink with Nutcracker ballet performances, virtual reality holiday films, and weekend concerts featuring national artists. The market operates Monday–Thursday 1:00 PM–10:00 PM and weekends 10:00 AM–11:00 PM. Due to popular demand from travel agencies, the 2025 edition was extended through January 11, 2026. Plan to arrive on a Friday or Saturday evening to catch the full Flying Santa's Sleigh spectacle and live stage performances.
