Getting There

Bregenz sits on the main rail line connecting Zurich, Innsbruck, and Vienna, making it easily accessible from across Austria and neighboring Switzerland and Germany. Zurich Airport, roughly an hour's drive west, serves as the nearest major international gateway, while Munich Airport offers an alternative entry point. The city is well connected by motorway to southern Germany and the broader Alpine region.

The lakefront and town center districts place visitors within easy walking distance of major attractions and the historic Oberstadt. Hotels, guesthouses, and apartments across various price ranges are concentrated in the central areas, providing convenient bases for exploring the city on foot.

The Bregenz Festival, held each summer on the world-famous floating stage on Lake Constance, has established the city as an international arts destination. The Kunsthaus Bregenz, housed in a luminous glass building designed by Peter Zumthor, ranks among Austria's most respected contemporary art museums. The Oberstadt, the medieval upper town, features historic fortifications, the distinctive Martinsturm tower, and panoramic views across Lake Constance toward Switzerland and Germany. The surrounding Vorarlberg countryside, including the Rhine Valley and Bregenzerwald, offers scenic landscapes and insight into traditional Alpine culture.

History & Culture

Bregenz originated as the Celtic settlement of Brigantium, later developed by the Romans into a significant outpost on Lake Constance's southern shore. Its strategic position at the intersection of Austria, Switzerland, and Germany made it an important trading and administrative center throughout the medieval period. The city became the capital of Vorarlberg, a role it maintains today. The Oberstadt preserves much of its medieval character, including the Martinsturm with its distinctive onion dome, one of the region's most recognizable landmarks. Bregenz has long balanced its Alpine heritage with a cosmopolitan character shaped by its position at the crossroads of three nations.

Bregenz Christmas is the city's main annual Christmas event, spreading across Kornmarktplatz, Rathausstraße, Leutbühel, and the historic upper town (Oberstadt).
