The Wernigerode Christmas Market transforms the historic Altstadt of this colorful Harz Mountains town into a festive wonderland each November and December, spreading across several atmospheric locations including the Marktplatz, Breite Straße, and Nicolaiplatz. Set against a backdrop of vibrant half-timbered houses, a medieval town hall, and lantern-lit cobblestone lanes adorned with Herrnhuter stars, the market offers a genuinely enchanting pre-Christmas atmosphere that draws visitors from across Germany and beyond. More than 60 vendors and restaurateurs fill the historic squares with traditional crafts, regional specialties, and mulled wine in every imaginable variety. The main stage in front of the Rathaus hosts live music and festive performances daily, while the Rathausinnenhof becomes a charming open-air cinema — the Filmhof — screening beloved holiday classics including the iconic black-and-white film "Die Feuerzangenbowle" every Friday evening, followed by a Christmas party. On Saturdays, the fairy tale "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel" delights audiences of all ages. The Nicolaiplatz features the beloved Wernigeröder Lebkuchenwald — a whimsical gingerbread forest with illuminated Christmas trees and life-sized gingerbread figures perfect for families with children. The Kunsthandwerkerhof on Marktstraße invites visitors to browse unique handmade goods in cozy artisan stalls. A living Advent calendar offers 24 free experiences throughout the season. The Lichterkirche at the Oberpfarrkirchhof dazzles with three-dimensional light sculptures of Harz wildlife. Entry to the market is free, and the town is easily reached by train or the scenic narrow-gauge Harzer Schmalspurbahn railway for a truly memorable winter excursion.
