Weihnachtsmarkt Wernigerode

The Wernigerode Christmas Market transforms the historic old town of Wernigerode — known as the 'Colorful Town in the Harz' — into a sprawling festive wonderland spread across the Marktplatz, Nicolaiplatz, and Breite Straße. Framed by centuries-old half-timbered houses adorned with painted carvings and illuminated by dozens of glowing Herrnhuter stars hanging over the cobblestone lanes, the market creates an atmosphere that feels genuinely rooted in regional tradition. More than 60 vendors and restaurateurs fill the historic squares with traditional crafts, regional culinary specialties, and mulled wine in every variety imaginable. A dedicated stage in front of the Rathaus hosts live music and festive performances daily. The Rathausinnenhof becomes a charming open-air cinema — the Filmhof — screening Christmas films for children and adults at 15:00, 17:00, and 19:00 daily, with the beloved classic 'Die Feuerzangenbowle' shown every Friday evening followed by a Christmas party. On Saturdays, the fairy tale 'Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella' screens at 19:00. The Nicolaiplatz features the whimsical Wernigeröder Lebkuchenwald, a gingerbread forest with illuminated Christmas trees and life-sized gingerbread figures delighting younger visitors. The Lichterkirche at the Oberpfarrkirchhof dazzles with three-dimensional light sculptures of Harz wildlife. Additional Weihnachtshöfe — festive courtyards including the Kunsthandwerkerhof, Krellsche Schmiede, and Schuhhof — offer artisan goods, regional food, and cozy ambience. A Wintermarkt continues around the Rathaus through January 6, extending the festive season well past Christmas Eve.
