The Wernigerode Christmas Market at Nicolaiplatz is a charming, child-focused corner of one of the Harz region's most celebrated festive events, set against a backdrop of colorful half-timbered houses in the historic old town. This particular square is home to the beloved Wernigeröder Lebkuchenwald — the Gingerbread Forest — a whimsical installation featuring illuminated Christmas trees and gingerbread figures tucked among the branches, designed especially to delight younger visitors. Now in its third year, the Lebkuchenwald has become a signature attraction of the Nicolaiplatz section, drawing families who want a quieter, more magical alternative to the busier main Marktplatz. The nostalgic Riesenrad (giant Ferris wheel) nearby adds to the festive fairground atmosphere. The broader Wernigerode Christmas Market spans several historic locations across the old town, including the main Marktplatz in front of the historic Rathaus, where a large stage hosts daily live music and festive performances. Visitors can also explore the Kunsthandwerkerhof for artisan crafts, the Filmhof in the Rathausinnenhof for outdoor Christmas cinema screenings, and the illuminated Lichterkirche on the Oberpfarrkirchhof. The market runs from late November through December 22, with Sunday through Thursday hours of 11:00–20:00 and extended Friday and Saturday hours until 21:00, with free admission throughout.
