Weihnachtsmarkt Wernigerode - Marktplatz

The Wernigerode Christmas Market at Marktplatz is one of the Harz region's most atmospheric holiday celebrations, set against the stunning backdrop of a medieval Gothic town hall and colorful half-timbered facades. Spreading across several historic locations in the Altstadt — including Marktplatz, Nicolaiplatz, and the Kunsthandwerkerhof — the market transforms the so-called 'Colorful Town of the Harz' into a glittering winter wonderland each November and December. More than 60 vendors and restaurateurs fill the historic market square with traditional crafts, regional specialties, and Glühwein in every imaginable variety. A large stage in front of the Rathaus hosts daily live music and festive performances, while the Rathausinnenhof becomes a charming open-air cinema — the Filmhof — screening beloved holiday classics including the cult favorite 'Die Feuerzangenbowle' every Friday evening, followed by a Christmas party. On Saturdays, the fairy tale 'Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel' delights families. The Nicolaiplatz features the whimsical Wernigeröder Lebkuchenwald, a gingerbread forest with illuminated Christmas trees and life-sized gingerbread figures perfect for children. The Lichterkirche at the Oberpfarrkirchhof dazzles with three-dimensional light sculptures of Harz wildlife, while Herrnhuter stars glow above the winding alleyways throughout the Altstadt. A Krippenweg (nativity trail) winds through shop windows across the old town, and a living Advent calendar offers 24 free daily experiences for families. After the main market closes on December 22, a smaller Wintermarkt continues around the Rathaus and Blumenuhr through early January. Arrive by train to Wernigerode Hauptbahnhof and walk or take the Citybus directly into the Altstadt for the most festive approach.
