Getting There

Arezzo sits along the main Florence–Rome rail corridor, making it easily reachable by frequent regional and intercity trains from Florence in under an hour and from Rome in roughly two hours. The nearest major international airports are Florence Peretola and Pisa Galileo Galilei, both well connected to Arezzo by rail. Travelers arriving by car can reach the city via the A1 Autostrada.

Where to Stay

Staying within or just outside the medieval walls places visitors close to the main piazzas and historic core. The area around Piazza Guido Monaco and the central train station offers convenient access for those arriving by rail, with a range of hotels and guesthouses to suit different budgets.

Other Attractions

Arezzo's historic center is anchored by the Piazza Grande, one of Tuscany's most striking medieval squares and the setting for the Giostra del Saracino jousting tournament. The Basilica of San Francesco houses Piero della Francesca's celebrated fresco cycle, the Legend of the True Cross, considered among the masterworks of Italian Renaissance painting. The city has a strong tradition as a center for antiques, with a monthly antiques market drawing dealers and collectors from across Europe. Day trips to Cortona, the Casentino valley, and the hilltowns of the Valdichiana are all within easy reach.

History & Culture

Arezzo is one of Tuscany's oldest cities, with roots stretching back to the Etruscan civilization, when it was known as Arretium and ranked among the most powerful cities of the Etruscan League. Under Roman rule it became a prosperous municipium, renowned for its production of fine red-glazed pottery known as Arretine ware, examples of which have been found across the former Roman Empire. During the medieval period Arezzo flourished as an independent commune and produced figures of lasting cultural importance, including the poet Petrarch and the artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari, whose family home still stands in the city. The city's layered architectural heritage—Romanesque churches, Gothic civic buildings, and Renaissance palaces—gives its streets a particular depth and gravity. Arezzo has long maintained strong civic traditions tied to its calendar of festivals and markets, reinforcing a sense of local identity that distinguishes it from more heavily touristed Tuscan destinations.
