The Arras Christmas Market transforms the city's extraordinary Grand'Place and Place des Héros into a dazzling winter wonderland each year, set against one of Europe's most remarkable ensembles of Flemish Baroque architecture. Walking through the market feels like stepping inside a giant snow globe, with the ornate gabled facades of the historic squares forming a backdrop found nowhere else in France. Spanning more than 150 chalet stalls across the Grand'Place, Place des Héros, and surrounding streets, the market draws visitors with an impressive mix of regional artisanship and festive entertainment. Nearly half of all vendors hail from the Hauts-de-France region, offering authentic local products rather than mass-produced goods. Shoppers can browse hand-blown glass ornaments, wooden toys, natural cosmetics, jewelry, and upcycled creations. Food lovers will find regional specialties including Maroilles cheese, coeurs d'Arras (the city's distinctive heart-shaped cheese), foie gras, honey, chicory conserves, and freshly made Flemish waffles, all washed down with spiced mulled wine or hot chocolate. The market's attractions extend well beyond shopping. A 35-meter Ferris wheel on the Grand'Place offers panoramic views of the illuminated city, while a traditional ice skating rink, carousel, sledge run, and horse-drawn carriage rides provide entertainment for all ages. Children can visit Santa's Village, meet Father Christmas in person, and enjoy creative workshops in a dedicated yurt on Place Ipswich. Each Friday, local brass bands perform throughout the market, and a spectacular light show floods the historic Belfry with color each evening.
