Christmas Markets in Arras

Arras has been an important settlement since antiquity, known to the Romans as Nemetacum and later becoming the capital of the Artois region. During the medieval period it grew into a prosperous weaving and trading city, renowned across Europe for its fine tapestries — so celebrated that the word 'arras' entered the English language as a term for a hanging tapestry. The city's distinctive Flemish Baroque architecture reflects centuries of cultural exchange with the Low Countries, and the two central squares were rebuilt in this style following earlier destruction. Arras suffered devastating damage during the First World War, when it served as a key Allied stronghold on the Western Front, and its careful postwar reconstruction preserved the historic character of the city centre.
