Lübeck's Weihnachtswelten transforms the entire UNESCO World Heritage Old Town into Germany's most expansive Christmas market experience, branded as the 'Christmas City of the North' — a tradition with documented roots stretching back to 1648, when the first market was held at the foot of the historic Rathaus. Spread across eleven distinct Christmas worlds, the celebration fills Lübeck's medieval island city with over a thousand Christmas trees and roughly half a million points of light, creating an atmosphere unlike any single-venue market in Europe. Each of the eleven markets has its own character: the Traditional Christmas Market around the Rathaus offers classic crafts and regional delicacies; the Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt at St. Marien transports visitors to the Middle Ages with jugglers, mead, and wood-fired bread; the Maritime Weihnachtsmarkt on the Koberg celebrates Lübeck's seafaring heritage with fish specialties and Nordic hospitality; and the Sternenwald on the Schrangen invites lingering among fir trees with a cozy Glühwein bar. Families are well served by the Wichtelwunderland on the Jakobikirchhof — featuring free mini-golf, craft activities, and the resident elf Gustav — as well as a Märchenwald fairy-tale forest at St. Marien. Craft lovers can browse three dedicated artisan markets inside the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital, St. Petri church, and the historic harbor warehouse Schuppen 6. The season opens on November 24 with a festive light procession through the Old Town and the illumination of the traditional Kotka pine near the Holstentor.
