The Historical Christmas Market at the Marienkirchhof (St. Mary's Church courtyard) is one of Lübeck's most atmospheric holiday destinations, transporting visitors back to medieval times in the shadow of one of northern Germany's most iconic Gothic brick churches. Set within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lübeck Old Town, this market is part of the celebrated Weihnachtswelten Lübeck — the Christmas Worlds of the self-proclaimed 'Christmas City of the North.' The market at Marienkirchhof stands out for its distinctly historical character, featuring medieval craftspeople, jugglers and street performers, mead (Met), and wood-fired bread that evoke the atmosphere of centuries past. Alongside the historical market, the churchyard also hosts the beloved Märchenwald (Fairy Tale Forest), where more than twenty lovingly handcrafted fairy tale houses bring classic stories like Snow White, Rapunzel, and King Thrushbeard to life for children and families. A children's train and carousel add to the festive fun. The market runs from late November through December 30, with regular hours of Sunday through Thursday 11:00–21:00 and Friday through Saturday 11:00–22:00, closing on December 24 and 25, with reduced hours on December 26 and 30. The entire Lübeck Christmas experience draws up to two million visitors annually, and the Marienkirchhof market sits at its historic heart. Arrive by foot from the main train station in about 15–20 minutes, or take advantage of the free Christmas shuttle bus running on event Saturdays.
